VeetUSA, a company that makes products for body hair removal, just posted a new line of commercials that tell women, “Don’t risk the dudeness!” It’s the concept that women will become dude-like if they don’t keep their body hair away 24/7… and it’s getting people up in (hairy) arms! Sites like Jezebel.com and individuals on social media are already calling out the brand for these ads, with many suggesting that they are sexist. Sure they’re superficially funny, but if you take just a second to think about it, this marketing campaign is really sending the wrong message. Isn’t it bad enough that woman are shamed for having "unsightly" body hair? Now Veet has to go and suggest that you’ll lose some of your femininity if you’re “prickly?” Maybe it’s just me, but that seems awfully time-consuming and just plain unnecessary. Women have better things to do than make sandwiches and shave constantly just to appear more attractive (and most un-dudeish) to the opposite (or same) sex. Sure, smooth legs are nice, and in our society a certain level of up-keep is accepted as the norm, but a little stubble doesn’t automatically swap your gender, Veet.
